An image of triangular patches on a white wall.
A patch on top of a pile of rocks. The text on the patch says "US Department of the Interior: Black BLM Lives Matter"
A pile of rocks with a patch upside down on it.

A series of patches that explore another possible Department of the Interior. These patches explore the difference between informal and formal symbols. This series began when the Bureau of Land Management controlled Malheur wildlife refuge was occupied by an armed militia in January 2016. In the New York Times, reporters used BLM as shorthand. I kept reading this as “Black Lives Matter” instead of “Bureau of Land Management,” which felt particularly relevant given the respect with which the entirely white militia was treated in contrast to how non-violent African American protesters were treated by police.

Shown in various ways at Michigan Technical University, the Beverly Sam Ross Gallery, and Crosstown Arts.
