Using an excerpt from John McPhee’s book In Suspect Terrain as a starting point, I explored the hole that many monuments came out of (i.e. where their stone was mined). In some instances, their symbolic origins aim at creating reconciliation (i.e. the stone for several Gettysburg monuments came from the former Confederacy) and in others they highlight the conflict of the country (i.e. Fort Sumter’s stone came from the Union).
