Raining, Alone

A collage of handmade paper, photographs, and vinyl on a white wall.
A closeup of handmade paper, photographs, and vinyl.

This piece is about the connections between Mary Austin and Edward Abbey (and the culture of mid-century nature writing more generally). The piece includes handmade paper from Edward Abbey’s problematic book Desert Solitaire, Mary Austin’s book about a solitary man in “The Pocket Hunter,” photographs placing Abbey in the lineage of other white people carving their names into western rock, ephemera printed on transparencies, and risograph collages.

Paper created with support from Hope Seed Studio.
