Not a red flag, not a green flag, a blaze orange flag
(Ruffner Mountain)
As a part of our research, Meredith Laura Lynn and I were invited to Ruffner Mountain nature preserve in Birmingham, AL in the fall of 2023, and were immediately taken by the quiet beauty of the landscape as well as the connection that visitors spoke of with the land. The resulting outdoor flag reflects the ostentatious nature of outdoor gear through the use of the safety color blaze orange (in this image) alongside a quiet moment of contemplation where we are gently caressing a fallen leaf (in the next image). Through this work, we contemplate the desire to connect with and through landscape and the layers of mediation that both enable and prohibit these relationships. The project is made with laser-cut polysilk and printed habotai silk on an aluminum frame covered in orange shrink-wrap. It was installed for a month outdoors.
This piece was made for Vinegar Projects.
