Bad Outdoorsmen (Application Video) (Northeast Florida)

This five-channel video installation created with Meredith Laura Lynn analyzes the characters cast on the History Channel reality TV show “Alone” as well as the characters of 18th and 19th century ecological writers and conservationists. This experimental application video mimics footage from the television show, as we attempt (and fail) to camouflage ourselves into the landscape. While outdoorsmen believe they can become one with nature, often claiming they are able to survive alone in the wilderness, they also fail. This failure is highlighted, questioning why the myth of the outdoorsmen survives in contemporary culture.
